Ride for a Child - Aritzve

Mission: A World Without Cancer

In the fall of 2016, then 4-year-old Aritzve had ankle pain that was getting increasingly worse. A pediatrician treated her for a sprained ankle, but the pain never subsided. When she stopped walking on Christmas Eve, Aritzve’s mom took her to the local emergency department where she received an X-ray and lab work, but was still treated for a sprain. In March, Aritzve was referred to Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego where she saw a hematologist and was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She immediately began treatment and today, Aritzve is in remission. She is learning to walk again with physical therapy, and is expected to fully complete treatment in June 2019.

Aritzve and her family recently volunteered to be one of the faces of Ride for a Child, a special program that is part of Padres Pedal the Cause, a cycling event that raises money and awareness for cancer research in San Diego. Ride for Child pairs teams of cyclists with pediatric oncology patients at Rady Children’s and offers an inspiring way for participants to connect with a child who is receiving state-of-the-art care and cancer treatment. Through pre-event meet-ups and events, teams of riders form a meaningful connection with their child and family, with many teams and families staying in touch long after the event.

For Aritzve, Ride for a Child gives her an exciting distraction from treatment and gives her a supportive team of individuals that will train, fundraise and ride in her honor.
