Heart Hero

Team Heart Hero is a creative and inspiring team at the Rady Children’s Shamu and You Family Walk. You can’t help but feel inspired by the beautifully handmade superhero capes proudly worn by the young heart patients on the team. Last year alone, Team Heart Hero raised more than $13,500 for the Heart Institute at Rady Children’s Hospital.

The team was started by Rebecca Weiss three years ago as a way to honor her son, Xavier, who was born with a combination of complex congenital heart defects. When Rebecca and her husband, Matt, learned of Xavier’s diagnosis, they felt very alone. However, what they have learned since those early days is that they are not alone. In fact, nearly 1 out of every 100 babies born in the United States has some form of heart defect.

Team Heart Hero has grown from its original vision and has become a way to honor each and every one of the heart heroes that receives care from Rady Children's Hospital. Many of these heart heroes have similar stories to Xaiver, filled with hospital stays, multiple surgeries, and too many doctors' appointments to count. With all that they have had to endure, there is no question that they truly are heroes.

Team Heart Hero is dedicated to supporting the Shamu and You Family Walk each year as a way to honor and support all of these heart heroes. All funds raised by team Heart Hero benefit the Heart Institute at Rady Children's and help to ensure that many more heart heroes, like Xavier, can receive the same level of excellent care.
