Junior Seau Foundation

Rady Children’s and Junior Seau Foundation leadership cut the ceremonial ribbon at the official dedication in Oceanside.

One of Junior Seau’s favorite expressions was, “It’s all about the kids.”

On December 8, 2015, those words were given life with the official dedication of the Junior Seau Foundation Specialty Pediatric & Urgent Care Center located at the WebMD Pavilion at Rady Children’s North Coastal Center in Oceanside.

“Junior Seau was dedicated to serving the children of his hometown San Diego. We are privileged to continue his legacy and are proud that this philanthropic investment will create a lasting remembrance that honors Junior Seau, a remarkable athlete, our founder, and a man who loved our community,” said Jay Kawano, President of the Junior Seau Foundation.

Not only was Junior Seau a celebrated football player and one of the most respected and beloved players in San Diego Chargers franchise history, but he also was one of the most philanthropic athletes in San Diego history. Even before he achieved his dream to play professional football, as Junior left the University of Southern California to enter the National Football League, he asked his former varsity basketball coach at Oceanside High School if there was anything he could do for the kids in the community.

Today, with a $500,000 donation to Rady Children’s, the Junior Seau Foundation has given more than $5 million to benefit the children of San Diego. This gift will enable the critical expansion of pediatric urgent care and specialty services in North County.  There are more than 110,000 children living within a ten-mile radius of the facility, known as the “Castle of Care,” which was opened in partnership with Sanford Children’s Clinic in 2011. As one of Rady Children’s fastest growing locations, expansion is necessary to ensure patients receive high quality, comprehensive care that is easily accessible and close to home for tens of thousands of families.

“We are thrilled to have the support of a Foundation that, above all else, is dedicated to helping children,” said Donald Kearns, MD, President and CEO of Rady Children’s. “This gift serves to further foster the vision and legacy that Junior Seau had vigorously promoted for his hometown community.”

The Junior Seau Foundation Specialty Pediatric & Urgent Care Center is located inside the WebMD Pavilion at Rady Children’s North Coastal Center at 3605 Vista Way in Oceanside. The facility also is home to the Sanford Children’s Clinic and various other Rady Children’s services, including urgent care, developmental services, occupational therapy, and pediatric subspecialty physician services.
