Race for Rady

The inaugural Race for Rady Beach Bash Fundraiser and Race for Rady Yacht Race were a resounding success, raising nearly $70,000 for the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego.

The Race for Rady Beach Bash Fundraiser, held Sept. 20, 2014 and presented by the Lipin Family Foundation, brought together nearly 150 San Diego Yacht Club and community members. Guests enjoyed an elegant dinner, an evening of dancing to live music by the band Surf’s Up and lively bidding on silent and live auction items. During dinner, an 18-year-old patient shared his battle with leukemia and how he triumphed. He then entertained the guests with a saxophone solo of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

On the following day, the Race for Rady Yacht Race, sponsored by the San Diego Yacht Club, fielded 16 boats in a regatta. Awards were presented to the top finishers, and the committee and crews celebrated a successful weekend.

The events were made possible by the Race for Rady Committee, chaired by Gwynn Thomas, and the generous sponsors: the San Diego Yacht Club, Marrs Maddocks & Associates Insurance Services, Inc., John Barbey Family Trust, San Diego Hardware, Thomas Marine Inc., the Amy Wax-Oversmith Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation, Oliver McMillan, Tom & Marcy Holthus, Driscoll Boat Yard, and Jim and Kathy Groark. Many other individuals and organizations donated items for the silent and live auctions.

Last year, the Peckham Center cared for 211 newly diagnosed cancer patients, more than 540 patients with bleeding disorders and 121 patients with sickle cell disease. Along with providing outstanding specialized cancer treatment and hematology services, including blood and bone marrow transplants, the Peckham Center is a leader in clinical research, giving children and families the best hope for a cure.
