National Association of Women in Construction

NAWIC's 3rd Annual Golf Tournament

National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) is an international association that promotes and supports the advancement and employment of women in the construction industry.  The San Diego Chapter, chartered in 1959, is a group of professional women active not only in the construction industry, but also in philanthropy. In 2010, NAWIC San Diego hosted a golf tournament to raise funds for scholarships and mentoring for women in the construction industry. After seeing the construction industry rally behind their cause for two years, NAWIC set their sights higher for 2012 and decided to include another beneficiary close to their hearts: Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego.

Paula Covert, co-chair of the golf tournament and membership committee member, shares her very personal reasons for supporting Rady Children’s mission. “Having been in the situation with a very sick child, I know something of the needs of the children and their families,” she says. “Rady Children’s Hospital provides the loving and caring environment where everyone involved is considered and cared for. The emotional support is as important as the medical support when faced with your worst fears.”

On June 21, 2012, NAWIC’s 3rd Annual Golf Tournament was held at Twin Oaks Golf Club in San Marcos. More than 100 golfers played in the event, a record for NAWIC.  They enjoyed 18 holes of golf on a gorgeous, sunny San Diego day, followed by a beautiful reception and dinner in the Clubhouse.  During dinner, there was an auction nearly twice the size of the year before, which included an opportunity drawing.

All of the attendees were delighted to be helping make miracles happen for the kids at the Hospital. The tournament raised $8,000 for Rady Children’s, and under Paula’s leadership, the event has continued to grow each year. It is a labor of love for the women of NAWIC San Diego, and they would not have it any other way.
