San Diego Chargers

A Winning Team for Rady Children's

The San Diego Chargers are a winning team on and off the field, demonstrating leadership in our community and helping Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego provide hope and healing for our region’s children.

The Chargers’ generosity to Rady Children’s began in 1998 with a $100,000 donation to the Super Ball celebration. The following year, their leadership gift of another $100,000 established the Brooke Humphries Fund, enabling the creation of a Chargers-themed orthopedic waiting room.

Their generosity inspired the community to raise an additional $800,000 to fund the Rady Children’s home healthcare vans, chaplaincy program and Starbright World, which connects San Diego patients with other pediatric patients nationally.

The Chargers also support Rady Children’s through Toss for Tots, a program in which fans can pledge donations for each touchdown scored and receive special benefits in return. To date, the program has raised more than $200,000.

Along with providing team support, many of the Chargers’ players give generously to Rady children’s and raise money for the Hospital on their own time. They sell newspapers during the annual Union-Tribune Kids’ News Day, host toy drives for patients, and participate in charity golf tournaments. Some of the players even visit our young patients each month during football season.

Because of the San Diego Chargers’ ongoing generosity and leadership in the San Diego community, they were awarded the 2010 Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation award by the Association of Fundraising Professionals – an award well-deserved!
