Austin Gatus

Austin lives by the motto, “My definition of HOPE = Have Only Positive Envisions. Never give up hope… for anyone.”

Former cancer patient Austin Gatus was recently honored as the 2014 Outstanding Junior Miracle Maker during the annual Miracle Makers Gala. Through sharing his story, he has not only helped patients and families, but has inspired philanthropic giving in our community.

Austin was first introduced to Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation during the 6th Annual Rady Children’s Telethon. Since this time, he has been on a mission of giving back.

Austin frequently speaks at Foundation events, telling his story of his long battle against leukemia. He did this at a past Circle of Care fundraiser, to 300 guests, then brought out his saxophone and began playing Somewhere Over the Rainbow with Kenny G. Subsequently, he played his saxophone at the grand opening celebration of the Acute Care Pavilion.

Along with the Foundation, others at the Hospital -- nurses, doctors, social workers, patient families and even the CEO, have called upon him to speak and perform for patients, donors and the Hospital board.

Through Austin’s numerous fundraising activities, he is a member of the Junior Miracle Maker Council. These activities include participating in the first Rady Children’s Shamu & You Walk; being selected by Hyundai in 2007 to represent the Pediatric Cancer Awareness Campaign through the Hyundai Hope on Wheels program, which benefits Rady Children’s; participating in the High School All-American Baseball Classic in San Diego (where he plays the national anthem), which benefits the Hospital as well; creating and selling CDs to benefit the Peckham Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders at Rady Children’s; and leading a variety of school fundraisers, community concerts and grassroots fundraisers to support the Peckham Center.

Austin lives by the motto, “My definition of HOPE = Have Only Positive Envisions. Never give up hope … for anyone.” He is an inspiration – and a true Miracle Maker.
